Before you play

Game teaching guide

What children will practise

Play and exercise safely: warming up, cooling down, what to do when a friend falls and gets hurt, choosing running shoes, playing in strong sun, and stopping when dizzy.

What's in the worksheet

6 multiple-choice questions, 3 options each - Before exercise, warm up - After exercise, cool down and drink water (distractor: an ice-cold shower straight away) - A friend falls and is hurt: tell a teacher or adult rather than hauling them up to walk - Running shoes should fit well and grip - In strong sun, drink water and rest in the shade; if dizzy, stop and tell an adult

How to use it in class

Best at the start of a PE lesson before going outside; about 5 minutes. - Read questions aloud, play as a class, then go straight into a real warm-up - For question 4, have children check whether their own shoes fit and laces are tight - For questions 5 and 6, go over body signals, dry mouth, dizziness, blurred vision, so children know when to stop - Play it linked to the class to record results in the mark book.

Common sticking points

- Question 3: 'help them up to walk' is the kind thing children want to do, so many pick it; explain that with a broken bone this makes it worse, so fetch the teacher first - Question 4: 'bigger than your feet so you can grow' is how many parents buy shoes, so children choose from experience - Question 6: 'drink water and hurry back to play' sounds right because it includes drinking water - Question 2: 'lie down at once to rest' looks like proper resting to a child
