Game teaching guide

What children will practise

Stay safe on the move: seat belts, where children sit in a car, cycling on the left with a helmet, safe places to cross, where to wait for a bus, and what to wear when walking at night.

What's in the worksheet

6 multiple-choice questions, 3 options each - Always wear a seat belt, even on short trips - Children sit in the back - Cycling: wear a helmet and keep left (distractor: keep right) - Cross at a zebra crossing or footbridge - Wait for the bus on the pavement away from the kerb; at night wear bright or reflective clothing

How to use it in class

Use in the travel safety unit or before a school trip; about 5 minutes. - Play as a class or in teams, then ask how each child gets to school to connect the relevant questions - For question 3, recall that Thailand drives on the left, so bikes keep left - For question 6, if you have a reflective vest or band, darken the room and shine a torch on it - Play it linked to the class to record results in the mark book.

Common sticking points

- Question 3: 'keep right' may confuse children taught to walk facing traffic, or who see motorbikes riding the wrong way locally - Questions 1 and 2: many children love the front seat and think it is safe; explain airbags can injure children - Question 4: 'at a bend where you can see far' sounds reasonable, but turning drivers cannot see the walker - Question 6: some children think dark clothes are practical because they hide dirt, missing the risk
