What children will practise

Know what to do in natural disasters, earthquakes, tsunamis and floods, recognise the tsunami warning sign, understand how mangroves protect coasts, and why early warning matters.

What's in the worksheet

6 multiple-choice questions, 3 options each - Earthquake indoors: drop, cover and hold on (distractor: take the lift) - The tsunami warning sign: the sea draws back unusually - On a tsunami alarm: get to high ground as fast as possible - Before a flood: move things up high and prepare essentials - Mangroves soften waves and stop erosion

How to use it in class

Use in the natural disasters unit, or before a school evacuation drill; about 6 minutes. - After question 1, have the class practise drop, cover and hold under desks for 10 seconds - For questions 2 and 3, show photos or a short clip of the 2004 tsunami in southern Thailand, chosen to be not too frightening - If many picked 'run down the stairs' on question 1, explain falling objects while running are the bigger danger - Play it linked to the class to record results in the mark book.

Common sticking points

- Question 1: running down the stairs at once is most children's instinct, so it is the strongest distractor; stress leaving only after the shaking stops - Question 2: 'strong wind and thunder' matches the storm picture children know, so some think tsunamis come with storms; explain they are caused by undersea earthquakes - Question 5: 'more white sand on the beach' tempts children who have never seen mangroves; show a picture of mangrove roots
