What children will practise

Early critical reading: telling fact from opinion, naming what adverts and news reports are for, and knowing what to do when two sources disagree. Tagged to ท 1.1 ป.4/2, with a clear link to ท 1.1 ป.4/4 (separate fact from opinion in what is read).

What's in the worksheet

6 questions, multiple choice with three options each - The fact: Thailand has 77 provinces - The opinion: This film is great fun - An advert is there to persuade you to buy; a news report to report what happened - When two sources contradict each other, check further, elsewhere

How to use it in class

Good before a lesson that uses a real news item or advert. About 6 minutes. In teams, ask each team to name the words that give an opinion away, such as สนุกมาก or อร่อยที่สุด. Afterwards, show one real advert and have children point to the fact and the persuasion. Follow question 6 with a short talk about which source is more trustworthy. You can link it to a class and record it in the gradebook.

Common sticking points

- Question 1: choosing Thai is easy to learn because it feels true to them. Ask whether everyone in the room would agree. - Question 2: choosing This film runs two hours because long sounds like a judgement. Point out that a running time can be checked. - Question 6: choosing believe the first because they remember it better. Tell a short story of a rumour that was corrected later.
