What children will practise

Sorts words by kind and job: verbs that take an object or not, modifiers of quality versus time, prepositions of place versus time, and conjunctions of agreement versus contrast. Closest to ท 4.1 ป.4/2, the kind and job of words in a sentence.

What's in the worksheet

4 questions, a sorting game with four word cards each - นอน (sleep) and ยืน (stand) take no object; กิน (eat) and อ่าน (read) need one - สวย (beautiful) and ใหญ่ (big) describe a quality; เมื่อวาน and พรุ่งนี้ say when - ใน (in) and บน (on) say where; ตั้งแต่ (since) and จนถึง (until) say when - และ and กับ show agreement; แต่ and ถึงแม้ show contrast

How to use it in class

Play it after all the parts of speech have been taught: despite the title, the set covers verbs, modifiers, prepositions and conjunctions. 6-8 minutes, ideally in teams. Have teams test each word in a frame such as ฉันกิน... or ฉันนอน... before deciding whether it needs an object. After question 3, carry on orally by calling out other prepositions for children to label place or time. You can link it to a class and record it in the gradebook.

Common sticking points

- Question 1: putting กิน with no object because people say กินแล้ว. Explain that the object can be dropped but is still understood: you eat something. - Question 4: putting กับ with contrast because they do not see it as a joining word. Give พ่อกับแม่ไปตลาด as an example. - Question 3: hesitating over ตั้งแต่, which can also mark place (ตั้งแต่บ้านถึงโรงเรียน). Admit it can do both, but here it counts as time.
