A look before you play
A few real prompts from the game to help you choose an activity for your class.
One with a subordinate clause qualifying some part of the main clause.
ที่ (that, which) introduces a clause qualifying a noun.
The clause "standing there" qualifies "person", so it is complex.
Before you play
Recognises complex sentences, the word ที่ that introduces a subordinate clause, and three kinds of conjunction: contrast (แต่), reason (เพราะ) and choice (หรือ). Matches ท 4.1 ป.5/2, the parts of a sentence.
6 questions, multiple choice with three options each - A complex sentence has a clause qualifying the main clause - The word that introduces the clause is ที่ - คนที่ยืนอยู่ตรงนั้นเป็นครูของฉัน (the person standing there is my teacher) is complex - Contrast: แต่; reason: เพราะ; choice: หรือ
Follows a lesson on compound sentences, to contrast them with complex ones. About 5 minutes, solo or in pairs. After question 3, underline ที่ยืนอยู่ตรงนั้น and ask which word it describes. Questions 4-6 extend well orally: say half a sentence such as ฉันอยากไปเที่ยว... and have children supply a conjunction and explain it. You can link it to a class and record it in the gradebook.
- Question 2: choosing และ because they learnt it as a joining word. Separate them: และ makes compound sentences, ที่ introduces the clause of a complex one. - Question 3: choosing simple because the sentence is short and has one person. Count the verbs: ยืน and เป็น. - Question 4: choosing กับ, unsure what it joins. Stress that กับ adds, it does not contrast.
