What children will practise

Practises idioms, words met in articles and news, higher-level opposites, and the origins of loanwords. Fits ท 4.1 ป.6/3 (foreign words, question 4) and ป.6/6 (idioms, question 1).

What's in the worksheet

4 questions, a matching game with four pairs each - Match มือไม่พายเอาเท้าราน้ำ to not helping, and hindering besides - Match ประจักษ์ to plainly evident and ตระหนัก to to be conscious of - Match the opposites อนุรักษ์ and ทำลาย, พัฒนา and ถดถอย - Match กาแฟ to Arabic and กรรม to Pali

How to use it in class

A 6-minute opener before reading an article or news report, in teams. After question 1, have a winning team mime one idiom for the others to guess. Words in question 2 such as ประจักษ์ and ตระหนัก are often seen but rarely used, so have each child write one sentence with one of them. After question 4, ask for one more loanword from each language. You can link it to a class and record it in the gradebook. In English mode, question 4 shows ก๋วยเตี๋ยว as noodles and the target as China rather than Chinese; say that it means the Chinese language.

Common sticking points

- Question 1: swapping ผักชีโรยหน้า and เอามะพร้าวห้าวไปขายสวน because both use produce images. Have children describe each picture first. - Question 2: swapping ประจักษ์ and ตระหนัก since both concern knowing. Separate them: ประจักษ์ is seeing plainly, ตระหนัก is realising inwardly. - Question 4: matching กาแฟ to Chinese because of old-style Chinese coffee shops. Explain that the word goes back to Arabic.
