A look before you play
A few real prompts from the game to help you choose an activity for your class.
The one with subject, verb and object complete and nothing said twice.
ทำการ is surplus; strike it out and the meaning is unchanged.
An ambiguous sentence can be read more than one way, and should be rewritten.
Before you play
Correct and fitting usage: sentences without repetition, padded wording, ambiguous sentences, suiting language to occasion, and the register for a report. Matches ท 4.1 ป.6/2, using words to suit occasion and person.
6 questions, multiple choice with three options each - The correct sentence: นักเรียนอ่านหนังสือในห้องสมุด (a distractor repeats อ่าน) - The padded sentence: เขาทำการเดินทางไปเชียงใหม่ (he undertook to travel to Chiang Mai) - The ambiguous sentence: เห็นเด็กตีแมวที่บ้าน - The word too colloquial for a report: เยอะแยะ
Use it before children proofread their own or a partner's writing. About 6 minutes, solo. After question 2, have children drop ทำการ and read it again to hear that the meaning does not change. After question 3, sketch the two readings on the board (who was at home: the one watching, or the child hitting the cat?) and have children rewrite it clearly. You can link it to a class and record it in the gradebook.
- Question 3: choosing เด็กตีแมวอยู่ที่บ้านของเด็ก because it is long and clumsy. Point out that awkward is not the same as ambiguous; ask how many readings each has. - Question 1: choosing อ่านหนังสือในห้องสมุด because Thai speech often drops the subject. Accept that it is said, but formal writing should include the subject. - Question 5: choosing casual colloquial because it is easy to write. Ask who will read the report. - Question 3: the distractor เด็กตีแมวอยู่ที่บ้านของเด็ก is itself slightly ambiguous (whose house?). If a child says so, accept it and show that เห็นเด็กตีแมวที่บ้าน is the more clearly ambiguous one. Since the examples involve hitting a cat, add a brief word that we do not hurt animals.
