What children will practise

Practises the meaning of Thai dance gestures, telling Thai performance types apart (khon, lakhon ram, likay, nang talung), matching folk performances to regions, and the jobs in a performance team. Supports indicator ศ 3.1 ป.3/1.

What's in the worksheet

4 rounds, match 4 pairs each - the beckoning gesture goes with "come here"; the refusing gesture goes with "no" - nang talung goes with moving leather puppets behind a screen; likay goes with folk-style singing and dialogue - fon thian (candle dance) goes with the North; phleng choi goes with the Central region - the director goes with planning the whole show

How to use it in class

Start with the gestures round, everyone standing to copy the beckoning, refusing and sorrow gestures before answering; about 10 minutes in total, team mode. Before the folk performances round, play a short clip of mor lam or phleng choi if you have one. The team-jobs round works well for assigning real roles before a class show. Play it linked to the class and the scores go into the gradebook.

Common sticking points

- Phleng choi is unknown to most children, who get it by elimination. Explain briefly that it is a Central Thai call-and-response song. - Lakhon ram and likay often swap since both involve singing and dancing. Point out likay leans on everyday-style dialogue. - Beckoning and refusing gestures may swap for children who have not actually tried them, as both use a hand movement.
