What children will practise

Practises recognising Thai and world performances and where they come from, the parts of a performance, the khon character types (phra, nang, yak, ling), and why performers prepare. Fits indicator ศ 3.1 ป.4/1.

What's in the worksheet

4 rounds, match 4 pairs each - Chinese opera (ngiw) goes with China; kabuki goes with Japan - the script goes with setting the story and lines; lighting goes with creating atmosphere - yak (demons) go with the side of wrong; ling (monkeys) go with Rama's soldiers - warming up goes with preventing injury

How to use it in class

Before the first round, show 10 seconds each of khon, ballet, Chinese opera and kabuki; the game takes about 8 minutes in teams. If the khon characters round goes badly, compare pictures of a demon mask and a monkey mask. The preparation round can become the class rules before rehearsing a show. Play it linked to the class and the scores go into the gradebook.

Common sticking points

- Chinese opera and kabuki: children who have seen neither swap them, as both use heavy make-up and rich costume. - Elements round: "acting = conveying a character's emotion" and "music = adding to the scene's mood" sound alike and get swapped. Point to the words character and scene. - Phra and nang: children may not know that in khon "phra" means the male hero role, not a monk.
