Game teaching guide

What children will practise

Learn that colds spread through coughs and sneezes, the right way to cough or sneeze, why handwashing and vaccines help, what to do when unwell, and why personal items should not be shared.

What's in the worksheet

6 multiple-choice questions, 3 options each - Colds spread through cough and sneeze droplets (distractor: by looking at each other) - Cover a cough or sneeze with your elbow or a tissue - Handwashing washes off germs - When unwell, tell an adult and rest - Vaccines build immunity in advance; sharing personal items risks infection

How to use it in class

Use in the rainy season or when colds are going round school; about 6-8 minutes. - Read the questions and options aloud, as they are long for Grade 1 - After question 2, have the class practise sneezing into their elbows together - Follow question 3 with the 7-step handwash at the sink if there is time - Whole-class or team play suits better than solo, as many children cannot yet read fast enough - Play it linked to the class to record results in the mark book.

Common sticking points

- Question 2: 'cover with your palm and wipe on your shirt' is what many children were taught, so they pick it; explain hands then carry germs onto other things - Question 5: 'cures the illness you have' reflects the belief that injections cure; make clear vaccines are given before you are ill - Question 6: 'safe within the family' matches home life where siblings share cups or towels, so many will pick it - Question 4: 'rest quietly and tell no one' draws shy children who do not want to bother the teacher
