Game teaching guide

What children will practise

A mixed Grade 1 health review: brushing teeth, refusing strangers, drinking water, sneezing correctly, hours of sleep, and the fire emergency number.

What's in the worksheet

6 multiple-choice questions, 3 options each, one topic each - Brush teeth twice a day - If a stranger asks you to go along, refuse and tell an adult (distractor: refuse and keep it secret) - Water is the drink to have most - Sneeze into your elbow - Children need 9 to 11 hours' sleep; call 199 for a fire

How to use it in class

Use as an end-of-term review; about 5 minutes. - Read every question aloud; play as a whole class or in teams - For question 6, have the class chant 199 together and post it by the board - For question 2, practise a short refusal out loud: No, I have to ask Mum first - Play it linked to the class to record results in the mark book.

Common sticking points

- Question 6: 191 and 1669 are real emergency numbers too (police and medical emergencies), so children who know 191 is 'the emergency number' pick it; explain when to use each of the three - Question 2: 'refuse and keep it secret' sounds good because it starts with refuse; stress always telling an adult - Question 5: hours are abstract for Grade 1; turn it into bedtime and wake-up time, e.g. 8 pm to 6 am
