Some foods are high in energy and low in worth.

Habits tell on your health over the years.
Sort into
Some situations need help immediately.
Before you play
Sort nutritious foods from high-energy low-value ones, habits that build or harm health, situations needing help at once from ones children can handle, and real safety gear from look-alikes that protect nothing.
4 sorting rounds, 2 baskets each - Nutritious or high-energy, low-value: steamed fish, crisps, blanched vegetables, fizzy drinks - Builds or harms health: regular exercise, late nights, vegetables at every meal, fried food daily - Get help now or handle it yourself: a friend unconscious, a small graze, someone drowning, feeling hungry - Safety gear or not: crash helmet, fashion hat, seat belt, leather belt
A quick warm-up for Grade 3 health, about 4 minutes. - Play in teams against the clock, since the cards are short and clear - In round 4, point out the look-alike pairs, helmet and hat, seat belt and belt, and ask what makes them different - In round 3, stress that if someone is drowning, children shout for an adult and throw something that floats, never jump in to help - Extend round 1 by asking for canteen snacks that are high-energy but low-value - Play it linked to the class to record results in the mark book.
- Round 1: 'high-energy, low-value' is a complex idea for Grade 3; some think high energy is good and drag snacks to the wrong basket; explain it gives fuel but not the nutrients the body needs - Round 4: fashion hat versus helmet and leather belt versus seat belt are deliberately alike; fast readers drag by the word hat or belt - Round 3: some children think a small graze must always be reported, which is not wrong; accept it and say they can clean it themselves once taught
