What children will practise

Know four parts of physical fitness, strength, flexibility, endurance and agility, how each is tested and trained, when to exercise, and how to read the body's warning signals.

What's in the worksheet

4 matching rounds, 4 pairs each - Fitness component to test, e.g. strength with push-ups, flexibility with sit-and-reach - Activity to component, e.g. jogging with heart endurance, skipping with agility - Time of day to activity, e.g. just after a big meal with resting first - Body signal to action, e.g. dizziness with stopping at once, breathlessness with slowing down

How to use it in class

Pair with the termly fitness test; about 5-6 minutes. - Play before going out to test, then ask which components will be tested today - In round 1, have children briefly try each move, 3 push-ups, one sit-and-reach - Revisit round 4 before every exercise session so children feel able to tell the teacher when something feels wrong - In English mode the round 1 card for endurance reads 'perseverance'; tell children it means physical endurance here - Play it linked to the class to record results in the mark book.

Common sticking points

- Round 2: skipping also builds endurance, so children may pair it with heart endurance, leaving jogging for agility; accept that skipping trains several things - Round 1: agility with the shuttle run is unknown to children who have never done that test - Round 3: some children think you should not exercise at all before bed, even gentle stretching - Round 4: bad muscle pain (rest and a compress) may be paired with stopping at once
