A look before you play
A few real prompts from the game to help you choose an activity for your class.
The body runs on several systems working together.
Cared for properly, an organ serves you far longer.
A risky habit strikes one system directly.
Before you play
Know the body's systems, respiratory, digestive, excretory, muscular and circulatory, how to care for key organs, which habits damage each system, and warning signs that call for a doctor.
4 matching rounds, 4 pairs each - System to job, e.g. respiratory brings in oxygen, excretory removes waste - Organ to care, e.g. kidneys with enough water and less salt, stomach with regular meals and chewing well - Habit to damaged system, e.g. very salty food with the excretory system, no exercise with the circulatory system - Organ to warning sign, e.g. heart with palpitations and tiring easily
Use in the 'our bodies' unit; about 6 minutes. - Keep a picture of internal organs beside the game and have children point to lungs, heart, stomach and kidneys on themselves - Play in teams; for round 3, have teams explain why salty food concerns the excretory system - If round 1 goes badly, add actions, breathing in and out, rubbing the tummy, moving an arm - Play it linked to the class to record results in the mark book.
- Round 3: Grade 3 children often think the excretory system means going to the toilet for a poo, so they do not link it with the kidneys; explain the kidneys filter waste into urine - Round 3: the circulatory system is not in round 1, so children may not know it and leave it to last - Round 2: regular exercise (the heart's care) also helps the lungs, so the two may be swapped - Round 4: kidneys with abnormal urine is usually fine if round 3 went well
