What children will practise

Sort communicable from non-communicable diseases, habits that lower or raise disease risk, first aid you should and should never do, and everyday foods from occasional ones.

What's in the worksheet

4 sorting rounds, 2 baskets each - Communicable or not: flu, diabetes, chickenpox, high blood pressure - Lowers or raises risk: regular exercise, very sweet food daily, fruit and veg, sitting all day - Do or never do: rinse a burn with clean water, put toothpaste on a burn, cold pack on a sprain, massage a sprain straight away - Everyday or occasional: brown rice, fizzy drinks, steamed fish, fried food

How to use it in class

Use to review the disease and first aid units; about 4-5 minutes. - Play in teams; after round 3, have each team share a first-aid myth they have heard at home - After round 1, ask whether anyone at home has diabetes or high blood pressure and whether it can be caught, without pressing anyone to answer - If round 3 goes badly, demonstrate running water over a burn for a long time - Play it linked to the class to record results in the mark book.

Common sticking points

- Round 3: toothpaste on a burn is still used in many homes, so children drag it to 'do'; explain it traps heat and invites infection - Round 3: massaging a sprain right away seems helpful because children see adults rub sore spots - Round 1: Grade 4 children may not know high blood pressure is a disease and guess - Round 4: children who never eat brown rice may not know what it is
