What children will practise

Learn basic first aid for minor burns, nosebleeds, sprained ankles and insect stings, remember emergency numbers, know what is in a first aid kit, and know what never to do and why.

What's in the worksheet

4 matching rounds, 4 pairs each - Injury to first aid, e.g. a minor burn with clean running water - Situation to number: medical 1669, police 191, fire 199, poison hotline 1367 - Kit item to use, e.g. gauze to soak up and cover large wounds, rubber gloves to prevent infection - Don't to reason, e.g. giving water to someone unconscious can make them choke, pulling out an embedded object increases bleeding

How to use it in class

Use in the first aid unit; about 6 minutes. - If the school has a first aid kit, open it and show the real items during round 3 - For round 2, have children copy all four numbers into their notebooks or put them up at home - In teams, for round 4 have teams explain the reason in their own words before dragging - Play it linked to the class to record results in the mark book.

Common sticking points

- Round 2: hardly any child knows the 1367 poison hotline, so it is left till last; 191 and 1669 are often swapped - Round 1: sprain and sting both mention a cold compress, so children reading one word swap them; look at the different words, raise versus wash - Round 4: children may not believe toothpaste on a burn is wrong because their family uses it - Round 3: some children think saline for wounds is something to drink
