Game teaching guide

What children will practise

Learn sports and basic rules: team sizes for popular games, words heard in matches, where each sport is played, and behaviour that shows sportsmanship.

What's in the worksheet

4 matching rounds, 4 pairs each - Sport to players per side: football 11, basketball 5, volleyball 6, sepak takraw 3 - Sports word to meaning, e.g. foul is breaking a rule, time-out is stopping the clock - Sport to venue, e.g. athletics with the running track, badminton with an indoor court - Behaviour to sportsmanship, e.g. accepting the referee's call shows respect for officials, not arguing after losing shows accepting defeat

How to use it in class

Use in PE before sports day or before teaching team games; about 5 minutes. - Play in sports-day colour teams against the clock - After round 1, compare the numbers per side in your PE lessons with the official rules - For round 4, have children describe sportsmanship they have seen in real matches or on TV - Play it linked to the class to record results in the mark book.

Common sticking points

- Round 1: basketball 5 and volleyball 6 are most often swapped, as the numbers are close and children rarely watch either - Round 1: children who play circle takraw at school may think sepak takraw has many players - Round 4: respecting opponents and kindness are close in meaning, so shaking hands and helping a fallen opponent may be swapped - Round 2: children who do not follow sport will not know time-out
