A few real prompts from the game to help you choose an activity for your class.

  1. Match each disease to how it spreads.

    • influenza
    • dengue
    • food poisoning

Game teaching guide

What children will practise

Understand communicable disease: how common diseases spread (flu, dengue, food poisoning, hand-foot-and-mouth), prevention that fits each route, epidemic vocabulary, and how individual behaviour affects an outbreak.

What's in the worksheet

4 matching rounds, 4 pairs each - Disease to route, e.g. hand-foot-and-mouth with contact with saliva and blisters - Disease to prevention, e.g. rabies with vaccinating pets - Epidemic terms, e.g. herd immunity means most people are immune so disease spreads poorly; a vector carries germs from place to place - Behaviour during an outbreak, e.g. sharing fake news causes panic

How to use it in class

Use in the communicable disease unit; about 6 minutes. - Round 3 is new vocabulary; explain herd immunity with a dot picture before playing - Play in teams; for rounds 1 and 2 have teams make each route match its prevention - Link round 4 to what children remember of COVID-19 - Play it linked to the class to record results in the mark book.

Common sticking points

- Round 3: quarantine and outbreak are words children heard during COVID without knowing exactly what they mean, and herd immunity is the hardest term in the set - Round 1: children may think hand-foot-and-mouth spreads through food because of the word mouth - Round 2: flu and food poisoning are usually fine, but rabies may be left till last because children expect vaccines to be for people
