Game teaching guide

What children will practise

Understand puberty through the role of hormones: why acne appears and how to care for skin, handling mood changes, why sleep matters for growth, and not comparing yourself with images in the media.

What's in the worksheet

6 multiple-choice questions, 3 options each - Hormones are chemicals that control how the body works - Teenagers get more spots because hormones stimulate oil glands - Skin care: wash your face and do not squeeze spots (distractor: scrub hard) - Mood changes: accept they are normal and find ways to relax - Growth hormone is released during sleep; do not compare yourself with edited media images

How to use it in class

Use in the adolescent growth unit; about 6 minutes. Sensitive topic, so play solo. - The set title mentions the reproductive system, but every question is about hormones, spots, moods, sleep and media images; none covers the reproductive organs, so teach that part separately - For question 6, show before-and-after edited photos so children see how much adverts are retouched - For question 3, stress that squeezing spots causes inflammation and scars - Open an anonymous question box afterwards for things children would be embarrassed to ask in front of friends - Play it linked to the class to record results in the mark book.

Common sticking points

- Question 2: 'only because they wash too seldom' and 'fried food and nothing else' are common beliefs with some truth, but 'only' and 'nothing else' make them wrong - Question 3: 'wash often and squeeze spots' is half right, catching children who do not read to the end - Question 5: 'the body makes lots of vitamin D while asleep' sounds scientific, though vitamin D comes from sunlight - Question 4: some children believe hiding all emotion is what grown-ups do
