Sample questions

A few real prompts from the game to help you choose an activity for your class.

  1. Match each training principle to its meaning.

    • frequency
    • intensity
    • duration
    • progression
    Read the explanation

These principles make exercise both effective and safe.

  2. Match each fitness component to a way of training it.

    • stamina
    • muscular strength
    • flexibility
    • body composition
    Read the explanation

    Each component is trained differently.

  3. Match each level of effort to how it feels.

    • light
    • moderate
    • heavy
    • very hard
    Read the explanation

You can judge effort by feel, with no instrument at all.

Game teaching guide

What children will practise

Plan exercise using frequency, intensity, time and progression, know how to train each fitness component, judge intensity by the talk test, and know what goes wrong when exercising badly.

What's in the worksheet

4 matching rounds, 4 pairs each - Principle to meaning, e.g. frequency is sessions per week, progression is building up gradually - Fitness component to training, e.g. body composition with diet plus exercise - Intensity to feeling, e.g. moderate: short sentences; very hard: cannot talk at all - Mistake to result, e.g. increasing intensity too fast leads to overuse injury

How to use it in class

Use before children write a personal exercise plan; about 6 minutes. - For round 3, have children jog on the spot for a minute, then try talking to rate their own intensity - Afterwards, have children write a one-week plan stating frequency, intensity and time - In teams, for round 1 have teams give a number example for each principle - Play it linked to the class to record results in the mark book.

Common sticking points

- Round 1: intensity and time are often swapped because children equate long with hard; separate how hard from how long - Round 2: body composition is not obviously a fitness component to children and is usually left till last - Round 3: hard (one word at a time) and very hard (no talking) are guesses for children who have never tried the talk test - Round 4: some children think cramp comes from skipping the warm-up and swap it with the first pair
