What children will practise

Prevent accidents and give basic help: most accidents are preventable, what CPR is, the first step with an unconscious person, safe use of electricity, swimming in natural water, and a fire evacuation plan.

What's in the worksheet

6 multiple-choice questions, 3 options each - Most accidents can be prevented (distractor: they are just bad luck) - Basic resuscitation is called CPR - Unconscious person: check safety, then call 1669 - Electricity: dry hands and no overloaded sockets - Natural water needs adult supervision; a fire plan means knowing exits and the assembly point

How to use it in class

Use in the Grade 6 safety unit or before a fire drill; about 6 minutes. - After question 6, walk the building's real fire exits and assembly point - For question 2, if the school has a CPR manikin, show a demonstration and explain that real training needs an instructor - For question 5, talk about local water children like to play in, canals, ponds, reservoirs - Play it linked to the class to record results in the mark book.

Common sticking points

- Question 5: 'fine with friends your own age' is what older children actually do, so many pick it; point out peers cannot rescue you and may drown too - Question 3: 'carry them into the shade at once' looks helpful but can worsen a neck injury - Question 6: city children who use lifts daily may pick 'know the way to the nearest lift'; stress never using lifts in a fire - Question 1: 'only preventable at home' tempts children who feel the outside world is out of their control
