What children will practise

Link body systems to common diseases, know what each health check examines, which habits benefit which system, and which warning signs need a doctor.

What's in the worksheet

4 matching rounds, 4 pairs each - System to disease, e.g. respiratory with asthma, excretory with kidney stones - Health check to what it checks, e.g. blood pressure with heart and blood vessels - Habit to system helped, e.g. fibre with the excretory system, enough water with the kidneys and excretory system - Warning sign to action, e.g. severe chest pain: go to hospital at once

How to use it in class

Use in the Grade 6 body systems unit; about 6 minutes. - Play in teams; in round 3 have teams read 'eat fibre' and 'drink enough water' carefully before dragging, as their partners look alike - Link round 2 to the yearly student health check children have had - For round 4, stress that severe chest pain means calling 1669 or going to hospital immediately, not waiting - Play it linked to the class to record results in the mark book.

Common sticking points

- Round 3: eat fibre (excretory system) and drink enough water (kidneys and excretory system) are nearly identical, so children swap them and may reasonably feel both ways are right; accept that a child who swaps them has not answered wrongly, and say which pairing the game counts - Round 1: children who think the excretory system means the bowels will pair it with gastritis - Round 4: fever over three days and rapid weight loss both lead to a doctor; 'see a doctor' and 'consult a doctor' are almost the same answer, so a child who swaps these two has not reasoned wrongly; accept it - Round 2 is usually fine
