A look before you play
A few real prompts from the game to help you choose an activity for your class.
The sun rises in the east and sets in the west.
In the evening the sun drops below the horizon in the west.
There are four: north, south, east and west.
Before you play
Practises the four cardinal directions using sunrise in the east and sunset in the west, finding east when facing north, and knowing what maps and map symbols are for. Fits indicator ส 5.1 ป.1/2.
6 questions, 3 options each - Where does the sun rise? (east) - How many cardinal directions are there? (4) - Facing north, which side is east? (your right) - Why do maps have symbols? (they stand for things so the map is easy to read)
Before playing, label north, south, east and west on the classroom walls by the real directions; the game takes about 7 minutes, whole class. For the facing-north question, have everyone stand, face the north sign and raise their right hand. For the symbols question, show a simple school or community map. For a question many miss, look at where the sun is from the playground one morning. Play it linked to the class and the scores go into the gradebook.
- Facing north: Grade 1 children are still unsure of left and right and often pick left. Standing up and doing it helps most. - Cardinal directions: some choose 8, having seen a compass with in-between points. - Sunset: children who only remember the first question may answer east again. Chant the pair: rises in the east, sets in the west.
