A look before you play
A few real prompts from the game to help you choose an activity for your class.
Most of Thailand's people are Buddhist.
The Buddha is the founder of Buddhism.
The Buddha's birth, enlightenment and passing all fell on this one day.
Before you play
Practises basic knowledge of Buddhism: the religion most Thais follow, its founder, why Visakha Bucha matters, giving alms, the first precept, and respecting other religions. Fits indicator ส 1.1 ป.1/1.
6 questions, 3 options each - Who founded Buddhism? (the Buddha; distractors are the Prophet Muhammad and Jesus) - Why is Visakha Bucha important? (the Buddha's birth, enlightenment and passing) - What is tak bat? (offering food to monks) - How do we respect other religions? (no mocking, behave politely)
Good before Visakha Bucha or a school alms-giving event, about 6 minutes, whole class, questions read aloud. In the Visakha Bucha question, the other two options describe Asanha Bucha and Makha Bucha, a chance to explain them briefly. If you have children of other faiths, the respect question is a chance for them to share their own religion. Play it linked to the class and the scores go into the gradebook.
- Visakha Bucha is the hardest question here for Grade 1, since the distractors are two other real holy days; children guess. Hook: born, enlightened, passed away. - Precept question: worded "ศีล 5 ข้อแรก", which children may read as "the first five precepts" and wonder why there is one answer. Read it as "the first of the Five Precepts". - Tak bat: some pick "putting money in the donation box", which they see often at temples.
