What children will practise

Practise core facts about ASEAN countries: capitals, currencies, which side of Thailand each neighbour lies on, and each country's best-known landmark or feature, so children get to know the neighbours and see how they differ.

What's in the worksheet

4 rounds of matching, dragging each left-hand item to its partner, 4 pairs per round - Countries to capitals, e.g. Vietnam with Hanoi, the Philippines with Manila - Countries to currencies, e.g. Laos with the kip, Myanmar with the kyat - Neighbours to compass directions, e.g. Myanmar to the west, Malaysia to the south - Countries to what they are known for, e.g. Cambodia with Angkor Wat, Vietnam with Ha Long Bay

How to use it in class

A good wrap-up for a lesson on Thailand's neighbours; allow 5-7 minutes. - Keep an ASEAN map on screen beside the game; before round 3, have a child point to Thailand, then match the directions - Play in teams of 4-5 so each team argues it out before submitting - If most of the class misses a round, pause, show the map or photos of Angkor Wat and Ha Long Bay, then replay that round - Play it linked to the class to record results in the mark book and see who still mixes up capitals and currencies

Common sticking points

- Round 2: kip and kyat are unfamiliar words, so children swap Laos and Myanmar; a hook is that Laos and kip are both short words - Round 3: Laos is north-east, but children may drag it to east, confusing it with Cambodia; show on the map that Laos sits above the Northeast region - Round 4: Singapore's partner is a description (port and trade), not a place, so it tends to be left till last; talk about why cargo ships stop there
