He devised the Thai script and brought Sukhothai to its height.
That the land was plentiful, and that the king ruled as a father rules his children.
It is called paternal rule, because the king looked after his subjects closely.
Before you play
Practise Sukhothai and Ayutthaya history: King Ramkhamhaeng's achievements, Inscription No. 1, paternal rule, how long Ayutthaya was the capital, its role as a trading port, and King Naresuan's deeds.
6 multiple-choice questions, 3 options each - King Ramkhamhaeng created the Thai script - Inscription No. 1 describes Sukhothai's town life and government - Sukhothai's rule is called 'father governing children' - Ayutthaya was the capital for about 417 years and was a trading port - King Naresuan declared independence and fought the elephant duel
Use at the end of the Sukhothai and Ayutthaya unit; about 6-8 minutes. - Before starting, show a photo of Inscription No. 1 or of the elephant duel to jog memories - Play in timed teams; for question 4 (417 years) let teams work it out from BE 1893 to 2310 on paper before answering - If many choose 'created the Thai script' for question 6, draw a two-column table, Sukhothai and Ayutthaya, and fill in kings and deeds together - Play it linked to the class to record results in the mark book.
- Question 6: the distractor 'created the script and inscription' belongs to King Ramkhamhaeng, so children who only remember 'a great king' swap the two - Question 4: 417 years means little to a child and many guess by feel; work it out from founding and fall dates - Question 3: 'absolute monarchy' sounds old-fashioned and may tempt; return to the image of a father caring for his children - Question 1: 'founded Thonburi' was King Taksin; if many choose it, the eras are not yet in order
