Climate follows how far you are from the equator.
Before you play
Sort four Grade 5 topics: saving versus investing, direct versus indirect taxes, climates near the equator versus near the poles, and events of the Thonburi versus Rattanakosin periods.
4 sorting rounds, 2 baskets each - Saving or investing: bank deposit, buying shares, piggy bank, opening a shop - Direct or indirect tax: income tax, VAT, land tax, excise tax - Near the equator or near the poles: tropical humid zone, frigid zone, tropical rainforest, ice fields - Thonburi or Rattanakosin: regaining independence from Burma, abolishing slavery, founding the capital at Thonburi, the 1932 revolution
Use as pre-exam revision since it draws on several units; about 5 minutes. - Before round 2, show a convenience-store receipt with the 7% VAT line so children see indirect tax hidden in the price - In teams, if members disagree on a card, they vote within the team before submitting - If round 4 goes badly, draw a timeline, Thonburi BE 2310-2325 then Rattanakosin, and have children place each event - Play it linked to the class to record results in the mark book.
- Round 1: opening a shop may look like ordinary earning rather than investing; explain you spend money on stock hoping for profit and may lose it - Round 2: excise tax is an unknown word and children guess direct; give examples, it is hidden in the price of fuel and sugary drinks - Round 4: some think abolishing slavery predates Rattanakosin because it feels ancient; stress it was under King Rama V - Round 3: rainforest is not a climate zone name and may cause hesitation; note that such forest grows in southern Thailand, near the equator
