What children will practise

Practise Thonburi and Rattanakosin history: King Taksin regaining independence, how long Thonburi lasted, the founding of Rattanakosin, King Rama V's reforms, the 1932 revolution, and why Thailand was never colonised.

What's in the worksheet

6 multiple-choice questions, 3 options each - King Taksin regained independence after Ayutthaya's second fall - Thonburi was the capital for about 15 years - King Rama I founded Rattanakosin - King Rama V abolished slavery and reformed government - Thailand avoided colonisation through diplomacy and modernisation

How to use it in class

Use at the end of the Thonburi and Rattanakosin unit; about 6-7 minutes. - Before starting, have children order the capitals Sukhothai, Ayutthaya, Thonburi, Rattanakosin by hand as a warm-up - Question 6 asks for a reason; afterwards show a colonial-era map of Southeast Asia so children see neighbours held by Britain and France - If questions 3 and 4 get swapped, pin up cards: Rama I founded the city, Rama V ended slavery - Play it linked to the class to record results in the mark book.

Common sticking points

- Question 1: King Naresuan also restored independence, but after the first fall; children swap the two; pair them: first fall Naresuan, second fall Taksin - Question 4: 'built the Grand Palace and founded Bangkok' is Rama I's work, chosen by those who only remember 'an important reign' - Question 6: 'the biggest army in the region' sounds reasonable to a child; point out Thailand survived through negotiation and adapting, not war - Question 2: 15 years may be confused with Ayutthaya's 417
