What children will practise

Practise Buddhist teachings for daily life, the Four Paths to Success, Four Sublime States, Four Bases of Kindness and Four Virtues of Household Life, knowing each item's meaning and linking children's own behaviour to them.

What's in the worksheet

4 matching rounds, 4 pairs each - Teaching to use, e.g. Four Paths to Success with finishing your work, Four Virtues of Household Life with keeping a steady household - The Four Paths: chanda, viriya, citta, vimamsa with their meanings - The Four Bases of Kindness: dana, piyavaca, atthacariya, samanattata with their meanings - Behaviour to teaching, e.g. being glad when a friend comes first in an exam with mudita

How to use it in class

Use after teaching each set of teachings, or as revision before a Buddhism test; about 6 minutes. - The Pali words in rounds 2 and 3 are hard; read them aloud together once before playing - Play round 4 in teams, then have each team add one example from their own lives per teaching - If round 2 goes badly, tell the story of getting good at football: liking it, practising daily, focusing, then working out what went wrong, following the four steps - Play it linked to the class to record results in the mark book.

Common sticking points

- Round 2: citta and vimamsa are often swapped because both concern the mind; citta is focus, vimamsa is checking and improving - Round 3: atthacariya and samanattata are the hardest words in the set and are usually left to guess last - Round 4: mudita does not appear earlier in this set, so children who have not covered the Four Sublime States will guess - Round 1: the Sublime States (living happily with others) and the Bases of Kindness (making friends) sound close and may be swapped, which is a reasonable slip rather than a wrong idea; discuss that the Sublime States are about the attitude of the heart, the Bases of Kindness about actions that win people over
