What children will practise

Get to know the wider world: a key country on each continent, world-famous landmarks, where the oceans lie, and what international bodies such as the UN, UNICEF, the WHO and ASEAN do.

What's in the worksheet

4 matching rounds, 4 pairs each - Continent to country, e.g. Africa with Egypt, South America with Brazil - Country to landmark, e.g. India with the Taj Mahal, France with the Eiffel Tower - Ocean to location, e.g. the Atlantic between the Americas and Europe, the Arctic around the North Pole - Organisation to role, e.g. UNICEF helps children

How to use it in class

Use in the world regions unit; about 5 minutes. Best on a big screen beside a world map. - After round 2, show a photo of each landmark; children remember pictures better than names - For round 4, ask where they have seen the UNICEF or WHO logo, e.g. in news about epidemics - Play in teams, sending a different member up to drag each pair on screen - Play it linked to the class to record results in the mark book.

Common sticking points

- Round 4: the UN and the WHO may be swapped by children who do not know the WHO is the UN's health agency - Round 3: the Indian Ocean (south of Asia) may be dragged to the Pacific by children who think Thailand only touches the Pacific; show the Andaman Sea is part of the Indian Ocean - Round 1: some think Egypt is in Asia because it is near the Middle East; point to it in Africa's north-east corner
