Sample questions

A few real prompts from the game to help you choose an activity for your class.

  1. How do กา, ก่า and ก้า differ?

    • the tone differs
    • the vowel differs
    • they do not differ
    Read the explanation

A tone mark changes the sound and the meaning even when the consonant and vowel are the same.

  2. Which word uses ไม้โท?

    • น่า (naa)
    • น้า (naa)
    • น๊า (naa)
    Read the explanation

ไม้โท looks like a small figure two above the consonant.

  3. How are ป่า and ป้า read differently?

    • the vowels differ
    • the first consonants differ
    • the tones differ
    Read the explanation

ป่า takes ไม้เอก and is read with the low tone (เสียงเอก); ป้า takes ไม้โท and is read with the falling tone (เสียงโท), so they are different words.

What children will practise

Practise basic tone changes: กา, ก่า and ก้า differ only in tone; ป่า and ป้า are read differently and are different words; จะ has no mark but a low tone; recognise ไม้จัตวา; Thai has four tone marks (ท 1.1 ป.2/1).

What's in the worksheet

6 multiple-choice questions - How do กา, ก่า and ก้า differ (the tone) - Which uses ไม้โท: น่า / น้า / น๊า - How are ป่า and ป้า read differently - Which word has a tone but no mark: จะ / จ่ะ / จ้ะ - How is ไม้จัตวา written, and how many tone marks does Thai have (4)

How to use it in class

Use after practising tone changes on mid-class consonants, 5 minutes in solo mode. - Before playing, the class chants กา ก่า ก้า ก๊า ก๋า together - Item 4 is hard; pause to explain that the written mark and the spoken tone don't have to match - For item 5, think of a real word: ก๋วยเตี๋ยว Play it linked to a class and the results go into the mark book.

Common sticking points

- Item 4: choosing จ่ะ, thinking a low tone needs ไม้เอก; จะ is a dead syllable with a mid-class consonant, so it is low on its own - Item 6: choosing 5, mixing up marks with the five tones; separate 4 marks from 5 tones - Item 5: swapping ก๋ and ก้ because the marks are small
