What children will practise

Practise the meanings of common Thai idioms, proverbs and sayings, such as น้ำขึ้นให้รีบตัก, วัวหายล้อมคอก and ช้า ๆ ได้พร้าเล่มงาม, and what the terms สำนวน, สุภาษิต and พังเพย mean.

What's in the worksheet

4 matching questions, 4 pairs each - Match ตำน้ำพริกละลายแม่น้ำ to spending for nothing - Match น้ำนิ่งไหลลึก to a quiet person often thinks deeply - Match หนีเสือปะจระเข้ to out of one danger into another, and ขี่ช้างจับตั๊กแตน to great outlay, small return - Match บั่น to cut short and สุภาษิต to a teaching with a moral

How to use it in class

Use once each group of idioms has been taught, 6 minutes in team mode, since many are hard. - Before items 1 to 3, picture the literal image first, such as riding a huge elephant to catch a tiny grasshopper, then guess the meaning - After item 3, each team acts out one saying for others to guess - ตำน้ำพริกละลายแม่น้ำ and ขี่ช้างจับตั๊กแตน are close in meaning; point out the difference - ชักแม่น้ำทั้งห้า means persuading by bringing up many reasons, not simply speaking indirectly Play it linked to a class and the results go into the mark book.

Common sticking points

- Item 1: swapping ตำน้ำพริกละลายแม่น้ำ and กว่าถั่วจะสุกงาก็ไหม้, both about cooking - Item 2: รักยาวให้บั่น รักสั้นให้ต่อ is hard at P3 because บั่น is unfamiliar; play item 4 first or explain it - Item 4: swapping สำนวน and พังเพย, which are very close in meaning
