Homework that comes back in suspiciously neat handwriting is a note from a parent that reads: this was too hard for my child. A whole row of books with the same wrong answer is a note from the children that reads: we copied. Both say the same thing. The task didn't fit, and you learned nothing real about what your class can do, which is the only reason homework exists.
The design rule: revisit old ground, never break new ground
The iron rule for lower primary homework is that it can only cover material you have already finished teaching in class. Homework is a practice ground for a skill they already have, not an adventure into a new one, because there is no teacher at home. A child who meets something new in their homework has three options: guess, hand it to a parent, or leave it blank. None of the three teaches them anything.
On quantity, the primary research broadly agrees: ten minutes per grade level per night, across all subjects combined. For a Grade 2 class that means English should take roughly five to ten minutes, or one single page with the first question worked through as an example.
Three kinds of homework children really can do alone
- Same shape, new questions. A worksheet laid out exactly like the one you did in class, with only the items changed. They already know the method, so all that's left is doing it.
- A hunt. Find three things at home that start with the b sound, draw them and write the words. Language gets tied to real life, and parents join in with the right role, as the audience rather than the author.
- Teach someone at home. Go and teach Mum three of today's words, and tomorrow you'll pick children at random and ask what Mum learned. A child who knows they have to teach it later listens twice as hard in class.
Collect homework as data, not as a tick in the register
When you mark, note down one thing only: which question more than half the class got wrong in the same way. That question is a mirror held up to your last lesson, not evidence that the children were lazy. Open the next lesson by fixing it together, and the loop of teach, practise, see the result, adjust closes exactly as it should.
