Before you begin
Decide from pictures which objects the wind can move, building the idea that moving air pushes things.
10 questions, 10 points - Look at each picture and circle the wind moves it / the wind does not move it - Six are moved by the wind: kite, paper pinwheel, sailing boat, windsock, wind pump and a leafy branch - Four are not: a book on a desk, a rock, a chair and a pencil on a desk - The answer key marks the correct option for every item
Use after children have blown or fanned real objects in class. Allow about 10 minutes. - Before starting, let children blow on a sheet of paper and an eraser to see which moves, then link it to the pictures - After marking, ask whether a very strong wind, such as a storm, could move the items in 2, 4, 6 and 8
- Saying heavy things such as the rock or the chair can be moved, because they have seen storm damage; accept the idea, then explain the sheet means an ordinary breeze - Believing air is 'nothing', so not seeing how it can push a kite or a sail - The answers alternate (every odd item is moved by the wind), so a child may follow the pattern instead of reasoning
