Teaching guide

What children will practise

Match pictures to eight words with different starting sounds, such as kite, elephant, umbrella and zebra, then listen for the first sound to choose the opening letter.

What's in the worksheet

12 items, 20 points - Word bank A-H: turtle, robot, whale, moon, umbrella, zebra, kite, elephant - Part A: write the letter for 8 pictures (16 points) - Part B: choose the first letter of kite, elephant, robot and whale (4 points) from K/M/T, L/E/A, B/T/R and W/H/V - Key: Part A reads G H B E F D A C; Part B reads K E R W

How to use it in class

Use for letter-sound review once children know all the letter names. Allow about 10 minutes. - Before starting, say each bank word and have children repeat only the first sound, e.g. /k/ /k/ kite - After marking, ask each child to find something in the room that starts with the same sound as one of the Part B words

Common sticking points

- In Part B, choosing L for elephant because the el sound stands out, or A because the opening vowels sound close - Choosing V or H for whale, as Thai learners often blur w and v, and wh contains an h - Choosing B or T for robot, letters that appear later in the word, instead of the first sound R - Picture 6 is a crescent moon, which a few children may read as a banana
