Teaching guide

What children will practise

Look at a material changing and write the name of the change, such as melting, freezing, dissolving, evaporating, tearing, breaking or changing shape.

What's in the worksheet

10 questions, 10 points - Write the name of the change under each picture; there is no word bank - Heating and cooling: ice in the sun and a candle (melting), water in a freezer (freezing), a boiling pan (evaporating), a wet shirt on the line (drying) - Sugar stirred into water (dissolving) - Force: tearing paper, a glass breaking, modelling clay into a bear and rolling dough (changing shape) - A separate answer key is included

How to use it in class

Use after children have seen real changes, such as ice melting or sugar dissolving. Allow about 15 minutes. - Put the key's words on the board as a word bank if children cannot yet write them unaided - Follow up by sorting the pictures into two groups: changes caused by heating or cooling, and changes caused by something we do with force

Common sticking points

- Mixing up dissolving (sugar in water) and melting (ice, candle wax) - Thinking the sugar has disappeared once it dissolves - Thinking the white cloud above the pan in Q10 is smoke - Not realising the water in the shirt in Q7 has gone because it evaporated
