Before you begin

Teaching guide

What children will practise

Look at each action and say whether it is a push or a pull, by noticing whether the force moves the object away from or towards the person.

What's in the worksheet

10 questions, 10 points - Write "push" or "pull" under each picture; every picture has a direction arrow - Five pushes: a toy car, a door, a swing, a shopping trolley and a football - Five pulls: a toy wagon, a kite, a drawer, tug of war and lifting a school bag - A separate answer key is included

How to use it in class

Use after children have pushed and pulled real things in the classroom, such as chairs, doors and drawers. Allow about 10 minutes. - Have children act out the push or pull in each picture before writing - Follow up by finding classroom objects that can be both pushed and pulled, such as a door, and demonstrating to a partner

Common sticking points

- Judging by whether the arrow points left or right instead of whether the object moves away from or towards the person - In Q2 the child walks forwards as in Q1, so children answer "push" although the wagon is being pulled behind - In Q3 the kite is flying away, so children answer "push" - In Q10 children are unsure whether lifting is a push or a pull
