Fill the missing number in sequences that go up or down in 1s, 2s, 5s and 10s, using the rule given.
10 questions, 20 points - Each rule is printed on a sign, e.g. up in 5s (5, 10, _, 20, 25) or down in 2s (20, 18, _, 14, 12) - Six sequences go up and four go down; the gap is always in third place - Question 8 runs up to 100 (97, 98, _, 100) and question 9 counts in 10s from 35 - A separate answer key is included
Use after children can count aloud in 2s, 5s and 10s. Allow about 10 minutes. - Before filling, have children read the rule and count on aloud from the first number - As an extension, cover the rule signs and let a partner work out the rule from the numbers alone
- Adding instead of subtracting on the decreasing patterns such as questions 6 and 7, out of habit from counting forwards - Writing 50 instead of 55 in question 9 by counting in round tens rather than on from 35 - Stepping by 1 every time without reading the rule on the sign
