Before you begin
Compare numbers up to 100 using place value and write >, < or = between them.
10 questions, 20 points - Write the sign in the circle between two numbers - Four pairs use swapped digits: 14 and 41, 58 and 85, 63 and 36, 25 and 52 - Some pairs differ in number of digits (9 and 19, 70 and 7, 100 and 99), and three pairs are equal (27, 42, 88) - A separate answer key is included
Use after the meaning of > and < has been taught. Allow about 10 minutes. - Have children read each item aloud as a sentence, e.g. "fourteen is less than forty-one", before writing the sign - For the swapped-digit pairs, sketch tens rods and ones cubes side by side to show why the tens digit decides
- Writing the sign the wrong way round, with the open side facing the smaller number - Answering 70 = 7 or 70 < 7 in question 8 because both show a 7 - Comparing the ones digit before the tens digit in swapped pairs such as 63 and 36 - Forgetting that = is allowed and forcing a > or < on the equal pairs
