Read pictographs where one picture stands for 1 and where it stands for 2, and answer questions on amounts, totals, differences and the smallest category.
10 questions, 20 points - Pictograph 1, favourite pets (1 picture = 1 person): cats 5, dogs 3, rabbits 4, fish 2; questions 1-5 include the total of 14 and cats outnumbering rabbits by 1 - Pictograph 2, juice sold (1 picture = 2 glasses): questions 6-10 include grape 4 pictures = 8 glasses, a total of 20 glasses, and grape beating apple by 2 - No half pictures are used - A separate answer key is included
Use once children have made simple one-to-one pictographs. Allow about 15 minutes. - Before the second chart, have children circle the key (1 picture = 2 glasses) and write the number of glasses at the end of each row - Follow up with a class survey of favourite fruit and let groups draw their own pictograph
- Counting pictures in the second chart without doubling, e.g. 4 glasses instead of 8 for question 6 and 10 instead of 20 for question 9 - Giving the bigger group's amount instead of the difference in questions 3 and 8, e.g. 5 instead of 1 - Answering questions 5 and 10 with a number rather than the name of the pet or juice
