Mathematics Data & Graphs worksheets on Sorting and Classifying Data for Grades 1–3 (P.1–P.3), difficulty 2/5. PDF, downloadable as soon as payment clears.
Before you begin
Sort a row of objects into two groups by a given rule and count each group, as a first step towards collecting and presenting data.
5 questions with 10 answer blanks, 20 points - An unscored example: 3 circles and 2 squares - Sort by shape (8 circles, 5 squares) and by pattern (8 striped, 4 spotted) - Sort by habitat, land or water (7 and 5), and by wheels, 2 or 4 (9 and 3) - Sort by size, big or small, using the same six objects twice (6 and 6) - A separate answer key is included
Use at the start of a data unit, before pictographs. Allow about 15 minutes. - Have children tick or cross off each picture as they count it so nothing is counted twice - Follow up by sorting real classroom objects, such as pencils and pens, and asking children to explain their own sorting rule
- In question 2 the balls come in several colours, so children sort by colour instead of pattern - In question 4 children may count only the scooters that look like the example, missing bicycles and motorbikes - In question 3 children may be unsure whether the turtles live on land or in water (the key counts them as water) - Skipping or double-counting a picture in a long row
