Teaching guide

What children will practise

Read what each picture is testing and write the property of the material it shows.

What's in the worksheet

10 questions, 10 points - Write the material property for each picture; there is no word bank - Pictures show tests, such as hitting rock and wood with a hammer (hard), stretching a rubber band (stretchy), a ball on water (floats), a spoon at the bottom of a bowl (sinks) and rubbing sandpaper (rough) - Other key answers: soft (pillow), transparent (glass), waterproof (raincoat), smooth (marble) and absorbent (sponge) - The answer key writes every answer in red

How to use it in class

Use after hands-on materials testing in class, such as float-or-sink and stretch tests. Allow about 15-20 minutes. - Put the ten property words on the board as a word bank if children are not yet writing them independently - After marking, ask children to find one classroom object that matches each property

Common sticking points

- Writing the material instead of the property, such as rubber for item 5 or glass for item 3 - Item 9 (marble): writing round or shiny, which describe shape or appearance, rather than the key's smooth - Item 10 (sponge): writing soft because a hand is pressing it, instead of noticing the water it holds
