Before you begin
Recognise rocks that differ in colour, pattern and texture, and separate them from things that are not rocks.
10 questions, 10 points - Look at each picture and circle rock / not a rock - Rocks: a speckled multi-coloured rock, a clear crystal cluster, a smooth banded pebble, a white veined rock and a black rock full of holes - Not rocks: an apple, a pencil, a book, a rubber duck and a toy car - The answer key marks the correct option for every item
Use early in a rocks unit, alongside a hunt for stones around the school. Allow about 10 minutes. - After marking, have children describe the five rocks on the sheet using words for colour, surface and weight, such as rough, holey or striped - If you have real rocks, match each one to the most similar picture
- Item 3 (clear crystals): marking not a rock because it looks like ice or glass - Item 9 (black rock with holes): marking not a rock because it looks like a sponge or charcoal - Expecting all rocks to be grey, and so hesitating over the white rock in item 7
