Curriculum indicators practised
Before you begin
Say which things are found in soil, from soil animals and roots to stones and fallen leaves, and which are not.
10 questions, 10 points - Look at each picture and circle found in soil / not found in soil - Found in soil: an earthworm, plant roots, a stone, ants and a dead leaf - Not found in soil: a fish in water, a cloud, a bird on a branch, an aeroplane and a rainbow - The answer key marks the correct option for every item
Use early in a soil unit, ideally after children have dug in a garden bed or examined a tray of soil. Allow about 10 minutes. - Before starting, let children look at real soil with a magnifying glass and say what they find - After marking, discuss how the dead leaf in item 9 slowly becomes part of the soil
- Saying the dead leaf (item 9) is not found in soil because leaves belong on trees - Saying the roots (item 3) are not in soil because they are part of the plant - Every 'found in soil' picture has a brown soil background and every other one shows sky or water, so a child can answer from the background alone
