Before you begin
Look at everyday things and say whether each is a solid, a liquid or a gas.
10 questions, 10 points - Write solid, liquid or gas for each picture - Solids: building bricks, ice cream, a wooden chair and a rock - Liquids: a glass of water, orange juice being poured and a bottle of milk - Gases: a balloon, steam rising from soup and the wind lifting a kite (the key means what is inside or around them, not the balloon, bowl or kite itself)
Use after teaching the features of the three states. Allow about 15 minutes. - Before starting, blow up a real balloon and ask what is inside, to prepare children for items 2, 6 and 9 - After marking, ask for one classroom example of each state and how they can tell
- Item 2: writing solid because they look at the balloon, not the air inside - Item 6: writing liquid because they look at the soup, not the steam rising from it - Item 9: writing solid because of the kite, or thinking wind is not matter because it is invisible - Item 3: writing liquid for ice cream because they know it melts
