A look before you play
A few real prompts from the game to help you choose an activity for your class.
Writing western notation, where a note's place on the lines gives its pitch.
That the second line from the bottom is G, from which every other note follows.
A semibreve lasts as long as four crotchets.
Before you play
Practises basic Western notation: what the five-line staff is for, the treble (G) clef marking where G sits, a semibreve lasting four crotchets, sharps and flats, and the benefit of reading music yourself. Fits indicator ศ 2.1 ป.5/1.
6 questions, 3 options each - What does the G clef tell you? (where G sits on the staff) - How long is a semibreve compared with a crotchet? (four crotchets) - What does a sharp do? (raises the note a semitone) - What does a flat do? (lowers the note a semitone)
Keep a staff with a treble clef on the board throughout, about 7 minutes, solo. For the semibreve question, have the class clap four crotchets, then hold one note for four beats to compare. For sharp and flat, play them on a keyboard or piano app right after the reveal. For a question many miss, write the note on the board and ask again orally. Play it linked to the class and the scores go into the gradebook.
- G clef: children often choose "the song starts on G", reading the name literally. Show the clef's curl wrapping the second line from the bottom. - Sharp and flat often get swapped. Hook: the flat sign ♭ hangs low like a small b, so it lowers. - Flat: the distractor "makes it half as loud" catches children who mix pitch with loudness.
