What children will practise

Put four procedures in order: helping an unconscious person, planning exercise, evacuating in a fire, and checking health information before believing it.

What's in the worksheet

4 ordering rounds, 4 cards each - Unconscious person: check the scene is safe, call out and check response, call 1669, start CPR if not breathing - Exercise plan: assess current fitness, set a realistic goal, plan frequency and intensity, monitor and adjust - Fire: raise the alarm, leave by the fire exit not the lift, go to the assembly point, never go back in - Health information: see who published it, check for sources, compare with health authorities, then decide

How to use it in class

Use as a review before leaving Grade 6; about 5 minutes. - Play in teams, reading each order aloud and explaining the first card - Follow round 1 by demonstrating the response check, tapping shoulders and calling loudly - Pair round 3 with the school's fire drill - Play it linked to the class to record results in the mark book.

Common sticking points

- Round 1: many children want to call 1669 before checking response, having been taught to get help fast; explain you need to know the condition to tell the dispatcher - Round 3: some think you should get out first and raise the alarm afterwards - Round 2: children tend to set goals before knowing where they stand - Round 4: checking sources and comparing with health authorities are close steps and may be swapped
