Before you play
Find sums of two numbers up to 10 by counting on, and see that swapping the order gives the same total, in line with indicator ค 1.1 ป.1/4 on finding the unknown in addition number sentences.
6 questions, multiple choice with 3 options each, all within 1 of the answer - 3 + 4 = 7, 5 + 2 = 7 - 4 + 4 = 8 (a double) - 2 + 7 = 9 (quicker counting on from 7) - 5 + 5 = 10 (two hands of fingers)
Use early in the addition unit once children can count on. 5 minutes. - Play solo so everyone thinks for themselves; fingers or counters are fine - After question 5, ask "Is it quicker to start counting from 2 or from 7?" to teach counting on from the larger number - If many are one too high, show counting on along a number line without saying the starting number again - Play it linked to a class and the scores go into the class gradebook.
- Answering one too many, e.g. 3 + 4 = 8, by counting the starting number again; 8 is one of the options - In question 5, counting on 7 steps from 2 and slipping, giving 8 or 10 - In question 6, answering 11 or 9 when fingers are miscounted
