What children will practise

Classify triangles, quadrilaterals and circles in everyday objects, in line with indicator ค 2.2 ป.1/1, and also sort one- and two-digit numbers and sums less or greater than 5.

What's in the worksheet

4 rounds, a sorting game with 4 items each - A roof and a triangular road sign are triangles; a window and a blackboard are quadrilaterals - A wheel and a round clock are circles; a book and a door are quadrilaterals - 7 and 4 are one-digit; 23 and 56 are two-digit - 2 + 1 and 1 + 1 are less than 5; 4 + 4 and 5 + 3 are more

How to use it in class

Use in a Grade 1 shapes lesson, followed by a shape hunt round the room. 6 minutes. - Play as a class; for rounds 1 and 2, point to real classroom objects of the same shape - Rounds 3 and 4 are about numbers, so warn children the rule changes - If many miss round 1, draw a house roof on the board and count its corners together - Play it linked to a class and the scores go into the class gradebook.

Common sticking points

- In round 1, putting the roof under quadrilateral, since many real roofs look rectangular from the side - In round 3, putting 23 or 56 under one-digit because หลัก (digit/place) is not understood - In round 4, putting 5 + 3 under less than 5 after seeing a 5 and not working out the sum
